The founding of Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery in Munich in 1968 marked the beginning of a forum of contemporary art that over the years has presented a great number of artists with their first solo exhibitions in Germany, or indeed their first solo exhibitions at all. Founded in 1996, ShanghART Gallery is one of the first contemporary art galleries established in China. Fort he past twenty years, ShangART has kept devoting to the development of Chinese contemporary art and also kept close and long-term cooperation with more than 60 artists.
Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle shows in cooperation with ShanghART the works of the Chinese painter Ding Yi. He was one of the first abstract painters in China to turn his back on traditional painting in the early 1980s and find his own, non-objective forms. From 1988 he concentrated exclusively on the crosses, first in ink on paper, then as painting on canvas or other painting grounds. The cross is for Ding Yi a symbol of the greatest possible precision, which at the same time seems to negate the possibility of individual expression. The classical symbols "+" and "x" are the exclusive motifs of his painting and its multiple superimposed picture levels, which gain depth only through the arrangement and superimposition of the crosses. The title of many of his works is "Appearance of Crosses".
