Willem de Kooning
16.05 - 02.07.2026
Opening on May 15 You Have to Change to Stay the Same: De Kooning // Schröder at Jahn und Jahn, Munich, during VARIOUS OTHERS brings together works on paper by Willem de Kooning and recent paintings by Düsseldorf-based Jana Schröder across the gallery’s two spaces. The presentation centres on works de Kooning produced between 1966 and the early 1970s, when drawing became inseparable from painting in his East Hampton studio. Quick sketches on newsprint – often pages of The New York Times – were pressed onto wet canvases, allowing the drawn line to migrate directly into the painted surface. Co-curated with London-based academic Matthew James Holman, the exhibition brings these two practices into a shared conversation about how forms emerge – and come apart – through expressive mark-making.
