Cindy Sherman at Palais Montgelas

On the first floor of Palais Montgelas, the Sammlung Goetz is presenting a selection of photographs by the American artist Cindy Sherman (*1954). Works from the series of History Portraits (1988-90) and Society Portraits (2008) enter into a dialog with the collection of historical paintings of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.
Using masks and costumes, Cindy Sherman stages herself in role-playing games that evoke works from art history or images influenced by the media. In doing so, Sherman exposes the artificiality of self-representation and questions clichés, role models and fears of today's society.

Crossing Virtual Borders: Cao Fei & Lu Yang

As part of a film program for the opening of Various Others 2025, Sammlung Goetz is showing a selection of works by Chinese artists Cao Fei (*1978) and Lu Yang (*1984) in the Astor Cinema Lounge of the Hotel Bayerischer Hof.
Cao Fei's RMB City Opera (2010) is an experimental theater piece inspired by the propaganda operas of the Chinese Cultural Revolution that explores the connection between real and virtual identities. Physical and digital spaces serve as a stage for the interaction between actors and avatars.
In DOKU the Self (2022), “Doku”, Lu Yang's non-binary avatar, assumes six different virtual identities. These correspond to the six realms of existence of the Buddhist wheel of life, death and rebirth.

Im ersten Obergeschoss des Palais Montgelas präsentiert die Sammlung Goetz eine Auswahl von Fotografien der US-amerikanischen Künstlerin Cindy Sherman (*1954). Werke aus den Serien der History Portraits (1988–90) und Society Portraits (2008) treten in einen Dialog mit der Sammlung historischer Gemälde des Hotels Bayerischer Hof.
Mit Masken und Kostümen inszeniert sich Cindy Sherman in raffinierten Rollenspielen, die bewusst an Werke der Kunstgeschichte oder an medial geprägte Bilder erinnern. Dabei legt Sherman die Künstlichkeit von Selbstdarstellungsstrategien offen und hinterfragt Klischees, Rollenbilder und Ängste der heutigen Gesellschaft.

Im Rahmen eines Filmprogramms zur Eröffnung von Various Others 2025 zeigt die Sammlung Goetz eine Auswahl von Werken der chinesischen Künstler:innen Cao Fei (*1978) und Lu Yang (*1984) in der Astor Cinema Lounge des Hotels Bayerischer Hof.
Cao Feis RMB City Opera (2010) ist ein experimentelles Theaterstück, das von den Propaganda-Opern der chinesischen Kulturrevolution inspiriert ist und die Verbindung von realen und virtuellen Identitäten untersucht. Physische und digitale Räume dienen dabei als Bühne für die Interaktion zwischen Schauspieler:innen und Avataren.
In DOKU the Self (2022) nimmt „Doku“, Lu Yangs nicht-binärer Avatar, sechs verschiedene virtuelle Identitäten an. Diese entsprechen den sechs Daseinsbereichen des buddhistischen Lebensrads von Tod und Wiedergeburt.

Munich's Promenadeplatz combines architectural elegance with important works of art and monuments. Where once stood the city's salt works, today a unique interplay of baroque cityscape, neoclassical architecture and modern public art unfolds.

The tour focuses on the impressive Palais Montgelas, an outstanding example of neoclassical architecture, which is now part of the traditional Hotel Bayerischer Hof. In its historic rooms, the Sammlung Goetz will be presenting photographic works by US artist Cindy Sherman from its own collection as part of the Various Others format, which brings together important players from the Munich art scene in the city.

Art in public space can also be discovered around the Promenadeplatz. Several monuments tell the story of Munich's rich tradition – from Karin Sander's sculpture of Count Montgelas to the Willibald Gluck monument and the informal Michael Jackson memorial at the statue of Orlando di Lasso. Monument, pop culture and city history come together here in a very small space.

A highlight of German post-war architecture and an important, modern part of the Promenadeplatz area is the Justice Building on Lenbachplatz. The controversial architecture by Sep Ruf and Theo Pabst replaced the Herzog-Max-Burg, which was destroyed in the Second World War. Today, the reconstruction is one of Germany's most influential post-war buildings.

Der Promenadeplatz in München vereint architektonische Eleganz mit bedeutenden Kunstwerken und Denkmälern. Wo einst die städtischen Salzstadel standen, entfaltet sich heute ein einzigartiges Zusammenspiel aus barockem Stadtbild, klassizistischer Architektur und moderner Kunst im öffentlichen Raum.

Im Fokus der Tour steht das eindrucksvolle Palais Montgelas, ein besonderes Beispiel klassizistischer Baukunst, das heute Teil des traditionsreichen Hotel Bayerischer Hof ist. In seinen historischen Räumen präsentiert die Sammlung Goetz im Mai im Rahmen des Formats Various Others, das wichtige Akteurinnen und Akteure der Münchner Kunstszene in der Stadt vereint, Fotoarbeiten der US-amerikanischen Künstlerin Cindy Sherman aus dem eigenen Sammlungsbestand.

Rund um den Promenadeplatz gibt es auch Kunst im öffentlichen Raum zu entdecken: Mehrere Denkmäler erzählen von Münchens traditionsreicher Geschichte – angefangen von Karin Sanders Skulptur des Grafen Montgelas über das Willibald-Gluck-Denkmal bis hin zum informellen Michael-Jackson-Memorial bei der Statue von Orlando di Lasso. Denkmal, Popkultur und Stadtgeschichte begegnen sich hier auf engstem Raum.

Ein architektonisches Highlight der deutschen Nachkriegsbaukunst und wichtiger, moderner Teil der Promenadeplatz-Umgebung bildet hingegen das Justizgebäude am Lenbachplatz: Die kontrovers diskutierte Architektur von Sep Ruf und Theo Pabst löste die im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörte Herzog-Max-Burg ab. Der Wiederaufbau zählt heute zu den prägendsten Bauwerken der deutschen Nachkriegszeit.
